love doesn't have to be a tug of war:

I wasn’t strong for freely giving my love away to people who didn’t deserve it. I thought that made me strong. I thought that made me a good lover. But what that was, was desperation. I used to think that loving someone as hard as I could showed them that I was worth keeping around. But all that did was push them away, taking the love I gave right along with them.
You can’t convince someone to love you by loving them with all your might, you see? That tells the universe that you need them. You need this experience. When you allow things to be. When you breathe and accept things for what they are, you operate from a place of tranquility. Calmness. When you remind yourself that love flows through you and to you. When you remember that you have love, that you are love, you won’t spend your time trying to convince someone that you’re worth loving. You just know. And you allow the people and experiences into your life that reflect that knowledge.
